Mary Shelley was an English novelist whose Gothic masterpiece Frankenstein helped found modern science fiction and has exerted a vast influence on literature and popular culture. She produced a wide-ranging body of work—including the historical novels Valperga and Perkin Warbeck, the apocalyptic The Last Man, and the later novels Lodore and Falkner—while also writing travel pieces and editing and promoting the poetry of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her fiction fuses Romantic imagination with political radicalism and feminist concerns, interrogating creation, parenthood, and the social value of cooperation as alternatives to individualistic ideologies. As an author and editor she reshaped genre boundaries and, after a long period of neglect, has been reclaimed by scholars as a major voice in nineteenth-century literature.
