Bio
William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon whose prodigious output—nearly forty plays, 154 sonnets and several long poems—established him as the pre-eminent dramatist in the English language. He mastered and expanded genres from comic romance and history to the great tragedies—Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth—while also creating enduring comedies such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night and late romances like The Tempest. His innovations in characterisation, dramatic structure, blank‑verse and the soliloquy transformed theatre, enriched English with countless phrases and images, and deepened the psychological realism of drama. Translated and staged worldwide and preserved in the First Folio, his work remains central to literature, performance and cultural imagination.
